What We Do
The work we do in North Richmond can be divided into 4 areas.
Spiritual

Plans are to start worship service in Spanish to reach out to the Hispanic population that make up the majority of this community. This church would be the relational ministry hub for all our work in North Richmond. In addition to Sunday services we would offer children ministries, youth ministries, summer Bible clubs, etc. We see this a place of hope, grace and truth for the whole family.
One of the huge ways to support the Spiritual needs of this community is through prayer. The prayer team has many ways to plug in:
*Neighborhood prayer tours
*Small clusters of praying friends
*Individuals dedicated to pray
To join the prayer team contact Ann Gardner.

Education

No significant learning occurs without a significant relationship.
– Dr. James Comer
We have adopted Pink Elementary and Juan Seguin Elementary School through a partnership with the National Adopt A School Initiative NCAASI.
The core of the program is promoting healthy school and home environments to maximize student success, providing a myriad of services designed to bridge the gap between the school, students and parents. This program is designed to find solutions to the individual needs of high-risk students. As such, mentors are placed in schools to supplement the education process and family support structures, addressing the academic and social development of public school students.
YOU CAN ACADEMY After school Program launched October 4 with over 30 students registered! YOU CAN ACADEMY is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays from 2:30-5:00 PM. Together with teachers, parents and volunteers we can help the children in North Richmond achieve their full potential. Volunteers with a heart to help children can provide academic assistance while nurturing a relationship with a child are needed.

Literacy

One of the issues facing many residents of North Richmond is that of literacy, being able to read and write; and the ability to speak English. Seventy-five percent of unemployed adults have reading and/or writing difficulties (National Institute for Literacy). One of the ways we are addressing these issues is through a partnership with the Literacy Council of Fort Bend.
Basic Literacy and ESL Tutors of all levels are needed as well as Tutors to help Adults with GED preparation and Basic Computer Skills. If we want to make a difference, we will need more volunteers in this area.
For more information on becoming a Literacy volunteer, please contact Becky Watts.
Construction

Safety is a concern of many of the residents of North Richmond. One of the ways this plays out is having a safe place to live. We are collaborating with organizations like Fort Bend Corps to build wheelchair ramps, paint houses, do home repairs, extreme home makeovers, and even new construction. We even plan to partner with the City of Richmond in the demolition of vacant dilapidated homes.
Because of the support from many volunteers, we completed 21 home repair projects in 2010. These repairs directly improved the quality of life, health and safety for our Friends in North Richmond. Our 2011 construction project goal is 15 with the first project scheduled for February 19, so stay tuned to the blog portion of this website for dates and descriptions of upcoming projects.
Volunteers are needed in all areas, especially those with construction knowledge and experience in leading a crew.
