AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM LAUNCHES!

Oct 10, 2011   //   by Becky Watts   //   Benevolence, blog, Education, Literacy, Poverty, Uncategorized  //  No Comments

Day One Group Picture It was an exciting first week of the YOU CAN ACADEMY After School program in North Richmond.  Over 31 students ranging in grades Kindergarten to 5th grade have registered and are meeting in the Brazos Bend Villa Community Center! Students are so excited to have a place to enjoy a snack, learn about God, play and get help with homework.  Thank you to the Friends of North Richmond volunteers and Fort Bend Christian Academy volunteers for serving this week!

We want to help encourage students to take personal responsibility to achieve all the things they don’t think they can do.  YOU CAN …dream, achieve, hope, pass, grow, learn, succeed, attend college, etc.
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Phil 4:13

Here are ways YOU CAN help
Choose a day – Tuesday, Wednesday and/or Thursday from 2:30 – 5:00 PM

Volunteers needed to help with:
- Math homework;
- Help with recreational activities;
- Lead a Math or Science project;
- Bring snacks;
-Pray for the students;
-Share your talent, your work or hobby interest; etc.

Why YOU CAN ACADEMY? A conversation to help answer that:

While setting up one afternoon in the community center, a little girl, we’ll name Nancy came in to ask what we were doing. I said, “We are getting ready to start an after school program for kids your age.”  Nancy said, “Oh good, I want to come.”  “Great, what grade are you in?”  She said, “I’m in 3rd grade, but I took a test today and this man is going to tell me if I passed or failed tomorrow.  If I failed I have to go back.   I know I failed ”.    Volunteer, Karen Showalter heard this and together we began to explain how pre-testing is done early in the school year and it was not an indication of failure. We told her not give up trying her best and that we knew she could do it!  Nancy is one of the most dedicated students attending YOU CAN ACADEMY!

We are excited to announce the addition of a staff member to the Friends of North Richmond initiative. Becky Watts started at the first of the year as our Friends of North Richmond Director. Becky had been helping our missions pastor, Richard Logan with various aspects of this initiative over the past several months. Richard is grateful to have Becky join him in this work and to now be giving it her full-time attention. Becky brings a love for our local community, and expertise in volunteer coordination among many other skills that will help this initiative maintain it’s momentum, and continue to grow. Richard will continue to oversee the big picture and vision of Friends of North Richmond, and Becky will work closely with the day to day operations.

Understanding Poverty

Nov 17, 2009   //   by riverpointe   //   Poverty  //  No Comments

I have been trying to learn more about poverty over the last few weeks. The book I am currently reading on the subject is “A Framework for Understanding Poverty” by Dr. Ruby Payne. Here are a few things I have learned so far.

Typically poverty is thought of in terms of financial resources only. While financial resources are obviously important, the ability to leave poverty is more dependent on other resources than it is upon financial resources. The other resources that play an enormous role are:

1. Spiritual Resources. The belief that help can be obtained from God. That there is a purpose for living, and that worth and love are gifts from God. It’s the belief that you are not helpless or worthless.

2. Emotional Resources. These provide the stamina to withstand difficult and uncomfortable emotional situations and feelings.

3. Mental Resources. This is about being able to process information and use it in daily living. If an individual can read, write, and compute they have a huge advantage!

4. Physical Resources. Simply having a body that works, is capable and mobile.

5. Support Systems as Resources. Having someone to go to when help is needed that is available and helpful.

6. Role Model Relationships. Having nurturing and appropriate role models to guide and direct.

7. Knowledge of Hidden Rules. Dr. Payne talks a lot about this in her book, as crucial to whatever class in which an individual wishes to live. She sited as an example three hidden rules in poverty: the noise level is high, the most important information is non-verbal, and one of the main values of an individual to the group is an ability to entertain.

To move out of poverty one needs resources in each of these seven areas. I am encouraged that we are addressing the majority of these resources listed above in the Friends of North Richmond initiative!
