We are one step closer to moving into North Richmond! Late last week we closed on 1.5 acres of land.  These are very exciting days as we plan out our building and prepare to break ground.  Thank you to the many who have been praying hard for this day to come!

Attack Poverty 5K

Apr 4, 2012   //   by richardl@riverpointe.org   //   Attack Poverty, blog  //  No Comments

The Run to Attack Poverty 5K was a great success! We want to give a huge shout out to the 60+ volunteers…many of which showed up at 5:30 a.m!  And a big thank you to the 422 runners who participated in the race.  We are so grateful for their support of this mission.  This race raised nearly $20,000! These dollars will play a huge a part in breaking the cycle of generational poverty!  One of the things that is very important to us is raising the value of education in North Richmond.  Gifts like this allow us to keep our after-school program going as well as expand and improve our work in this area. Thank you to everyone who showed up to support us in attacking poverty!

AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM LAUNCHES!

Oct 10, 2011   //   by Becky Watts   //   Benevolence, blog, Education, Literacy, Poverty, Uncategorized  //  No Comments

Day One Group Picture It was an exciting first week of the YOU CAN ACADEMY After School program in North Richmond.  Over 31 students ranging in grades Kindergarten to 5th grade have registered and are meeting in the Brazos Bend Villa Community Center! Students are so excited to have a place to enjoy a snack, learn about God, play and get help with homework.  Thank you to the Friends of North Richmond volunteers and Fort Bend Christian Academy volunteers for serving this week!

We want to help encourage students to take personal responsibility to achieve all the things they don’t think they can do.  YOU CAN …dream, achieve, hope, pass, grow, learn, succeed, attend college, etc.
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Phil 4:13

Here are ways YOU CAN help
Choose a day – Tuesday, Wednesday and/or Thursday from 2:30 – 5:00 PM

Volunteers needed to help with:
- Math homework;
- Help with recreational activities;
- Lead a Math or Science project;
- Bring snacks;
-Pray for the students;
-Share your talent, your work or hobby interest; etc.

Why YOU CAN ACADEMY? A conversation to help answer that:

While setting up one afternoon in the community center, a little girl, we’ll name Nancy came in to ask what we were doing. I said, “We are getting ready to start an after school program for kids your age.”  Nancy said, “Oh good, I want to come.”  “Great, what grade are you in?”  She said, “I’m in 3rd grade, but I took a test today and this man is going to tell me if I passed or failed tomorrow.  If I failed I have to go back.   I know I failed ”.    Volunteer, Karen Showalter heard this and together we began to explain how pre-testing is done early in the school year and it was not an indication of failure. We told her not give up trying her best and that we knew she could do it!  Nancy is one of the most dedicated students attending YOU CAN ACADEMY!

Neighborhood Clean-UP

The Friends of North Richmond mission is gearing up for another Neighborhood Clean-Up, and your help is greatly appreciated! There are several volunteer roles that are needed, and we are reaching out to you to help make this event another successful outreach.

There are needs for volunteers on Saturday, October 29th and Saturday, November 5th for the Friends of North Richmond Neighborhood Clean-up. Volunteers are needed both days. If you’re interested, please visit http://friendsofnorthrichmond.org/construction to sign up!

On Saturday, October 29th, 10:00 AM – Noon The Construction Team specifically needs volunteers to walk designated streets in North Richmond to hand out and ask residents to sign waivers in preparation for the Neighborhood Cleanup Day. These volunteers will also help us identify future candidates for construction projects.

Saturday, November 5th is Neighborhood Clean-up Day! 8:00 AM- 1:00 PM, we need approximately 200 volunteers that day to accomplish our goal. We need 11 “Street Captains” for the 5th who will be assigned to a street and direct a volunteer crew.

As with every neighborhood clean-up, we are in need of “Street Captains,” who is someone who takes a lead role in ensuring that a particular street’s needs are being addressed.  If you would like to be a Street Captain, please plan to arrive early on Saturday, October 29th at 9:00 AM for a training session. Ideally (but not required), Street Captains would participate on both October 29th and November 5th. No construction knowledge or skills are needed. You just have to be able to lead a group and facilitate getting the clean-up efforts done.

We will need the following roles/equipment:

  • Street Captains Waiver collection crew members (October 29th)
  • Check-in table crew members -both days
  • Food crew members (November 5th only)
  • Clean-up crew members (November 5th only)
  • Trucks and trailers (November 5th only)
  • Prayer team – both days

Sign-Up, TODAY!  http://friendsofnorthrichmond.org/construction

Thank you!
