FNR Clean-UP

Oct 25, 2010   //   by Becky Watts   //   Uncategorized  //  No Comments

The friends of North Richmond Team Rocks!!  Over 180 friends divided into 11 Street Teams swept up 19 streets in North Richmond!   We had 3 fabulous Dumpster teams as well which included the RPC Youth!  Thank you to our wonderful prayer team who covered the streets in prayer prior to us arriving!  “We know something good is happening when we see the people in green shirts come in”,   a quote one of our volunteers heard from a resident. We met many more residents who would like assistance with home repairs and several teams visited with the families we met from our last clean-up.

Many thanks to all the volunteers and Barkley Peschel for leading the team, but a special thanks to Teresa Roberts for the coordination of the volunteers and street captains!  Both weekends were a huge success because of her efforts!

Literacy Area Expanding!

Oct 20, 2010   //   by Becky Watts   //   Literacy  //  No Comments

It’s exciting to watch adults eager to learn how to read and speak English!  In partnership with the Fort Bend Literacy Council,  The Friends of North Richmond ESL classes have begun and continue to grow with new students.   Currently, Level 1, 2 and 3 are being taught on Monday and Wednesday evenings.  We also have 1 GED preparation class being taught during that time.  Plans to start two more daytime classes  in the new “Mamie George Community Center” in November.   Volunteers are needed to meet the needs in the community. No experience is necessary. Training is provided by the Fort Bend Literacy Council. The next training is scheduled for November 8, 10 & 13.
